| Cassandra Brown earned the singles championship, while Marlene Millner and Grace Zachman captured the doubles title, at the Northwest Suburban Girls Tennis Tournament on July 7-8 in Elk River. All are members of the Elk River tennis team, as are singles runner-up Michaela Schultz, and the third-place doubles team of Leah Koehler and Collette Forsyth. "About 50 percent (of the entrants) were from Elk River and our players acquitted themselves real well." In the singles finals, Brown, junior-to-be who played No. 2 singles for the Elks' state tournament team last year, beat Schultz, who's going into eighth grade and played No. 4 singles last year. Placing third was Kayla Buckley of St. Michael-Albertville. The consolation champion was Lisa Scheevel of St. Cloud. {snippet instory} Millner and Zachman, both juniors-to-be at ERHS, beat Koehler and Forsyth and an Alexandria team to reach the finals,where they topped another Alexandria team, Emily Wllkins and Eve Hartsell, 6-4, 6-3, keyed by strong play at the net. The doubles consolation winners were Kate O'Connell and McKail Granning, also of Elk River. The field had 20 singles players, and 16 doubles teams. |
